See photos Plans for Asylum Building AnnouncedThe Finance Control Board voted Tuesday and granted authority for the City to purchase the former Asylum Nightclub Building located on Main, Worthington and Fort Streets for $630,000. Springfield Arbor Allies Hold a Planting DaySpringfield Arbor Allies planted 10 trees in the downtown area on a recent Saturday, with the help of volunteers including the the Parks Dept. Forestry staff and a crew of 12 from the Sabis Charter School. Several cherry and ginkos trees and a green spire linden donated by the Springfield Business Improvement District now enhance the downtown streetscape and make Springfield a greener place. Kelcey to the Springfield City Council for confirmation to serve as a member of the City’s License Commission. Mahoney of Ludlow has been chosen to fill the Human Resources Director position vacated by outgoing Personnel Director Marilyn Montagna and to perform the duties of the newly created position of Labor Relations Director. Consolidation of the job duties of these two positions will save the city an estimated $225,000 annually. More Dog LicensesJune 5, 2009: Last night all City of Springfield residents received a message regarding dog licenses that contained misinformation. The message was sent in error and the City sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience this may have caused. No further action is required on the part of those residents who received the message. New Chief Development Officer AppointedMayor Domenic J. Sarno has announced that John D. Judge of Boston has been chosen to fill the position of Chief Development Officer formerly held by David Panagore. The current VIC will be relocated within the Hall of Fame, leaving the 4,100 square foot building available later this summer. Download it here Springfield Announces Findings for Community Development Block GrantThe City of Springfield, in partnership with the UMass Donahue Institute, has announced the findings of a federally mandated assessment and study establishing priorities for the expenditure of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds for economic development in Springfield’s low and moderate income neighborhoods. Springfield's Bond Rating UpgradedThe City has received word that Standard and Poor’s has given the City's bond rating a full level upgrade to BBB+ with a stable outlook after Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and City Officials met with bond rating agencies in New York City regarding the rating. Read more New Ordinance Regulates Maintenance of Vacant and Foreclosed Properties Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and the Springfield Finance Control Board have passed an ordinance which will regulate the maintenance of vacant or foreclosed residential properties in Springfield. The purpose of the ordinance is to protect and preserve public safety, security, and quiet enjoyment of occupants, abutters and neighborhoods where vacant and foreclosed residential properties are located. Get the new entertainment license regulations and application forms here 3-1-1 Citizen Service Center AnnouncedSpringfield's 3-1-1 Service Center provides “One Call to City Hall” access to non-emergency city services through the 3-1-1 number and call center. Created primarily by transferring existing City employees, the 3-1-1 Service Center has been operating since September of 2008 and has already fielded more than 40,000 calls. Customer service representatives are available from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and services can be requested online (though the 3-1-1 link or www.springfield-ma.gov/311) 24 hours a day. Through the Center, citizens can obtain information from all City departments and request service from the Housing, Parks, and Public Works departments as well as the Police Ordinance Squad. Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and the Springfield DPW have announced a pilot program scheduled to begin on Sept. 20th in part of the East Forest Park section of Springfield.
