With the Nov. 4 Presidential Election approaching, the Springfield Election Commission Office is encouraging voters who have moved to update their voter registration.

Updating your existing voter registration by October 30th will save waiting time in line at the polls and the confusion that may occur when voters go to the incorrect polling location. Those who change their address at the polls must present acceptable proof of residence and fill out an affirmation form verifying their address.

Voter registration is permanent. However, you must re-register if you have moved, wish to change your political party affiliation, or have changed your name. If you have not answered the City Census your name will appear as INACTIVE which means you will have to fill out a voter affirmation form and show identification. The Election Commission STRONGLY urges voters who are not sure if they sent in there census to call the office.

Massachusetts residents who are citizens of the United States and will be at least 18 years of age by November 4th may register to vote.  The deadline for voter registration in Massachusetts is October 15th at 8:00 p.m.

Mail-in Voter Registration forms can be filled out and mailed to the Election Commission Office by anyone eligible to register to vote.  The forms can be requested by calling (413) 787-6190.  Assistance in registering to vote is also provided in person at the Springfield Election Commission Office, by staff at any Registry of Motor Vehicles branch, and some Social Services agencies.

Voters can check the status of their registration online at the City of Springfield website, springfieldcityhall.com/COS or by calling (413) 787-6190.  The Election Commission Office has processed more than 6,500 new voter registration applications so far this year.
