City Gets Inspection Certificate for Stage Elevator

For the first time in over ten years the City of Springfield has a valid inspection certificate for the Stage Elevator (lift) at Symphony Hall.

The Facilities Management department and our elevator maintenance vendor have been busy over the last year and a half visiting all of the sites in our public buildings with elevators. We have completed safety repairs, installed emergency telephones and upgraded controls on many of our units throughout the schools and public buildings.

Most of these repairs and inspections fell under the category of routine, for the lift at Symphony Hall we had a few unique hurdles to address before the state inspector could certify that elevator. All elevators require a weight test before the state will certify them as being safe to operate.

Normal elevators usually only require five to ten thousand pounds of weight to be placed inside of them for these tests.  Because of the size of the stage elevator at Symphony Hall we needed to arrange for 60 thousand pounds of weight to be delivered and placed on the stage to perform this test.

After reviewing a plan in October to use several forklifts driven onto the stage for the weight test, we dropped that option and petitioned the state for an extension. Once an extension was granted the Facilities department created a plan with our vendor to secure the special weights from around the state for the final inspection.

On Wednesday December 26th the sixty thousand pounds were delivered to Symphony Hall at 6:30 in the morning and by noon the test were completed and the elevator was certified by the state inspector.

Many thanks to all of the team in the Facilities Management department and to Associated Elevator for their creative solution for getting this test completed.
