Mayor Ryan's Proclamation

Whereas,
Intellectual disabilities affect more than 7.5 million American children and adults and their families; and

Whereas,
The most effective tools for alleviation of the serious problems associated with intellectual disabilities are public understanding and opportunities for valued roles; and

Whereas,

Best Buddies works to foster relationships between people with and without intellectual disabilities, and to maximize the potential for individuals with intellectual disabilities to learn valuable social skills and become valued members of their local communities; and

Whereas,
The importance of empowering citizens with intellectual disabilities to live more independently and productively cannot be understated.

Now, Therefore, I, Charles V. Ryan, Mayor of the City of Springfield, do hereby proclaim March 1, 2007 as "Best Buddies Day" in the City of Springfield, and I urge all our citizens to take cognizance of this event and participate fittingly in its observance.
