Main Street improvements begin

The Main Street improvement project is expected to kick off on Monday, August 27th. The project will begin next week, starting from the railroad arch on the north end of Main Street. Work will begin on one side of the street, with the section opposite the Hippodrome the first to be effected. The work zone will progress on that side of Main Street until complete, and then return to begin on the other side of the street. The project is expected to be complete before the winter months. "With a roadway improvement project of this magnitude there will be some disruptions and inconveniences, however we expect to minimize them," said Brian Connors, Deputy Director of Economic Development. "Vehicle and pedestrian travel through Main Street will remain open throughout the work, as will access to all of our downtown stores and restaurants."

The project area runs from the railroad arch near Lyman Street to Bliss Street. The improvements include a complete repaving of the street, select sidewalk reconstruction, new crosswalks, pedestrian countdown clocks, traffic signals, street trees, and new street light fixtures.

Ground floor businesses are encouraged to leave storefront lighting and any exterior lighting on throughout the term of project to assist pedestrians. As the current lighting will be torn down in the coming weeks and new lighting is put in place there may be some periods of reduced lighting levels in which storefront lighting could assist.
