Flag Flown In Bagdad

May 16, 2008 - A Memorial Day Flag Raising Ceremony on the esplanade of City Hall on Friday, May 23rd will take on a special meaning for the residents of Springfield this year.

During the ceremony, a flag that was flown in Baghdad, Iraq during U.S. combat operations on April 17, 2008, will be raised. The flag was flown in Iraq in honor of the citizens of Springfield and Mayor Domenic J. Sarno at the order of Colonel Stephen E. Spelman, of the U.S. Army Law and Order Task Force.

The flag will fly on the esplanade of City Hall until dusk, weather permitting.

The Memorial Day Ceremony will begin at noon on the esplanade of City Hall. Major Michael Simon of the United States Marine Corps will be guest speaker. Central High School Air Force JROTC will post colors. Central High School Air Force JROTC, Commerce High School Army JROTC, Roger L. Putnam Technical-Vocational High School Air Force JROTC and the High School of Science and Technology Navy JROTC will act as Color Guards.  The United States Marine Corps Westover Reserve Air Force Base will provide Honor Guard Rifle Detail.

The event begins at noon on the esplanade of City Hall and will include remarks by community leaders and veterans. The Springfield Veterans Services Department will direct the program.
