New England Patriots and New England Dairy & Food Council Team Up with Glickman Elementary School Kick-off Event Will ‘Do Amazing Things’ for School Wellness
Springfield, MA – Fourth and fifth grade students at Glickman Elementary School in Springfield, Massachusetts, will fuel up their bodies and minds with a new nutrition and fitness initiative, “Do Amazing Things”, developed by the New England Patriots and New England Dairy & Food Council (NEDFC). The new initiative kicks-off Wednesday, October 15th from 2-3 p.m. with physical fitness and nutrition activities encouraging students to take action for their health by moving more and eating smart.
The “Do Amazing Things” initiative is part of a larger nationwide effort aimed to inspire youth to adopt healthier behaviors, such as choosing more nutritious foods and committing to 60 minutes of physical activity every day. New England Patriots sponsored HOPSports™ will attend the kick-off event and lead students in a 20 minute, interactive physical fitness exercise encouraging them to participate in at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day. Students will also learn the importance of choosing nutrient-rich foods including low-fat and fat-free dairy products, whole grains, fruits and vegetables as they make and sample delicious yogurt parfaits in the cafeteria.
Today, more than ever, children are overweight, under-nourished and have sedentary lifestyles. Only two percent of school-aged children consume the recommended daily number of servings from all five major food groups and only 35 percent of students are physically active for 60 minutes at least five days per week.
“This initiative will provide students the knowledge and tools to make positive changes that can develop a lifetime of healthy habits,” said Diane Krol, RD, LDN, Nutrition Specialist for NEDFC. “With students consuming nearly 50 percent of total daily calories at school, the school food environment is an ideal setting for teaching healthy eating and physical fitness behaviors.”
The “Do Amazing Things” kick-off event will take place in the Glickman Elementary School gymnasium (120 Ashland Ave., Springfield) Wednesday, October 15th from 2-3 p.m. Springfield Public School officials as well as media are invited to attend.
