City Hall Property Auction
The City is pleased to announce that all 28 properties offered at the Oct. 7th public auction sold for a total of $688,000. More than 100 properties in tax title possession have been sold during public auctions held on January 17, 2007; April 14, 2008; July 15, 2008; and Tuesday, Oct. 7th. The sale of the auctioned properties has netted close to $2.4 million for the City. The city’s next public auction will take place in early 2009. Mayor Domenic J. Sarno said the auctions have proven to be an effective tool to help strengthen Springfield neighborhoods “street by street and block by block.” “Returning these vulnerable properties back to usefulness have helped sustain neighborhoods as well as the city’s tax rolls,” said Sarno. “These sales have benefited the city, but they have also been very well received by developers.” Auctions have been well attended. Some 65 bidders qualified for Tuesday’s auction. Three of the highest bids Tuesday evening were 245 El Paso St. for $63,500; 12 Quebec St. for $75,000 and a Berkshire Avenue parcel for $200,000. The city held the auctions in conjunction with Daniel J. Flynn & Co. of Quincy. Italian Flag Raising Ceremony

Mayor Sarno responds to ForbesReading the recent Forbes article about the ten fastest dying cities led us to think about Mark Twain, less about the man and more about one of his quotes: "The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated." In the case of Springfield, Massachusetts and inclusion by Forbes of the city in its deathwatch, we would argue the Forbes not only exaggerated but also misread the vital signs.
