Project Homeless Connect Offers Real Help

June 2, 2008 - On June 6th the City of Springfield will partner with service providers, citizens and faith communities to bring multiple resources to one location where people in need can find the services they need.

The purpose of the program is to connect homeless individuals and families, or those on the cusp of homelessness, with vital resources including services related to: housing, employment, medical and mental health care, legal assistance, transportation assistance, food and clothing. Haircuts will also be provided.

Project Homeless Connect will take place at the MassMutual Center from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness Executive Director Philip F. Mangano and Mayor Domenic J. Sarno will be joined by local community and political leaders during a 7:30 a.m. address to volunteers and participants.

Now in its second year here in Springfield, Project Homeless Connect (PHC) is a national best practice model that originated in San Francisco. The goal of PHC is to provide easy access to services that support the transition of area homeless people off of the street and into housing.

Mangano has said Springfield's efforts have become a model for other cities of its size in reducing homelessness and combating homelessness on the streets. The City is engaged in an aggressive 10-year plan to end homelessness. Today, there are 39 percent fewer people living on the streets compared to a year ago.
