Sarno Administration Initiates Anti-Gang Movement

(March 24, 2008) - Mayor Domenic J. Sarno; Acting Police Commissioner William J. Fitchet; Hampden County Sherriff Michael Ashe and several social service agencies will hold a press conference on Tuesday, March 25 at 10:30 a.m. in the Office of the Mayor. The event is planned to announce the first anti-gang program of the Sarno Administration.

"The harsh reality is that gangs are real here in Springfield and this Administration will not stick its head in the sand when it comes to combating this situation. We will face it head on," said Mayoral Aide Darryl E. Moss.

Moss is Mayoral Liaison for the Sen. Charles E. Shannon Jr. Community Safety Initiative for the City of Springfield. The award is part of nearly $11 million earmarked for 39 communities. Springfield received $1.4 million from the pool.

Sarno, who has repeatedly stated that public safety is his top priority, said his office will take a leadership role with anti-gang initiatives.

"We are committed to taking back our streets and look forward to collaborating with social service agencies and the police department to coordinate not only a frontal attack but to make sure we  also weave a strong web of supportive services for our youth," said Sarno.

Tuesday's press event will outline the first initiative the Office of the Mayor has planned.
