Convinced that Springfield can reach the goal necessary to keep the Springfield American Hockey League franchise from leaving the City, Mayor Domenic J. Sarno today pledged his support to Falcons President and General Manager Bruce Landon, and challenged local businesses and families to rise to the occasion.
"This is something we simply have to achieve," said Mayor Domenic J. Sarno. "To sit around and watch the Falcons leave Springfield would be a shame. Economically, it would create a huge spin-off void."
Mayor Sarno today began making personal telephone calls to numerous members of the business community in an appeal for their support of the Falcons. Area businesses can use these season tickets as a marketing tool and as a token of their appreciation for valued customers, he said. The franchise is looking for 500 new season ticket holders by June in order to stay in the city.
"I am optimistic business owners will rally around and support the franchise," said Sarno. "The Springfield Falcons are a part of this city's DNA and vital to a vibrant downtown."
In purchasing pairs of season tickets for his own family, Sarno also appealed to residents and citizens. He stressed the opportunity competitive league games, just one skate away from the National Hockey League, present for family fun and togetherness.
"It's expected that businesses would be able to finance a larger number of tickets, maybe as incentives or for marketing purposes. But every season ticket sale helps ensure the longevity of the Springfield franchise, and that is where individuals and families come into the playbook," said Sarno.
Landon, who met with Sarno on the subject this week, said the franchise is pleased to have the public support of the Mayor.
"We know he loves this City and makes this appeal from the bottom of his heart," said Landon, adding that the franchise ownership does not want to leave Springfield.
