Springfield Superintendent Search Narrowed to Four Finalists

(Springfield, MA) Springfield Mayor and School Committee Chair Domenic J. Sarno and Springfield Finance Control Board Chairman Chris Gabrieli announced this morning that four finalists will be interviewed on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday next week for the position of Superintendent of Springfield Public Schools.

Springfield Finance Control Board Chair Chris Gabrieli said: "We are delighted with the quality of leaders eager to take this position and excited for the next chapter in Springfield's quest for excellence in its public schools.  I look forward to the collaborative and integrated process we will engage in as we come together to interview the candidates next week."

Springfield Mayor and School Committee Chair Domenic J. Sarno said: "I am thrilled we have entered into this phase and very much look forward to hearing more from each of our very qualified candidates. I am pleased by the level of experience that each candidate brings to the table and the different perspectives they represent.  This process marks the beginning of a revolution of the Springfield Public School System and the interview process will be very deliberate, thoughtful and in depth."

Jim Huge, superintendent search consultant, said: "This is an exceptional group of leaders with high ethical standards, diverse backgrounds and have all demonstrated the ability to lead groups in significantly increasing achievement for all students."

The candidates will all be interviewed by panels made up of community members on Sunday, May 4 at 6 pm.  Members of those panels will provide structured feedback to the Springfield Finance Control Board and School Committee.

On Monday, May 5 between 9 a.m. and 12:15 pm and on Tuesday, May 6 between 9 am and 12:15 pm, the finalists will be publicly interviewed in jointly held sessions of the Springfield School Committee and the Finance Control Board. In a joint afternoon session on Tuesday, May 6, the School Committee and the Finance Control Board will convene jointly to deliberate on the selection process and expect to make a decision that day.

All of the interviews will be held in Springfield City Hall, Room 220, and are open to the public.

The four finalists are:

Matthew H. Malone of Boston, who has served as superintendent of Swampscott Public Schools since 2005. Under his leadership, Swampscott Public Schools has seen in increase in MCAS achievement in most grade levels from 2005 to 2007. Under his leadership, the school system also opened a $54 million high school. He is a graduate of the Broad Center Urban Superintendent's Academy. He was a sergeant (E-5) in the United States Marine Corps.

Ret. Air Force General Joseph Redden of Marietta, GA. who is the program manager of Leadership Development for the Stupski Foundation in Mill Valley, Calif. Redden held the position of Superintendent of Schools in Cobb County in Georgia from 2000 until 2005. As superintendent of schools, Redden oversaw an increase in reading and math scores by 9 and 11 percentage points across elementary schools since 2001; and an increase in science and social studies scores by 13 and 14 percentage points. He is a graduate of the Broad Center Urban Superintendent’s Academy.

Alan J. Ingram of Oklahoma, who is currently the chief accountability officer for the Oklahoma City Public Schools. Prior to that position, Ingram held the title of executive director of federal programs for that school system from 2003 to 2007. In that position, Ingram achieved a 58 percent reduction in the number of schools designated for improvement. He is a graduate of the Broad Center Urban Superintendent's Academy. He is a retired chief master sergeant in the United States Air Force.

Basan N. Nembirkow of South Deerfield, who has held the position of superintendent of Brockton Public Schools since 2004. Nembirkow was superintendent of Chicopee Public Schools from 2002 to 2004. Under his leadership, the Brockton School system reconstituted an underperforming elementary school into an intermediate school for talented and gifted students and launched the district’s first K-8 school.
