New Superintendent To Spend First Day In Schools

Dr. Alan Ingram starts work Tuesday

June 30, 2008 - Dr. Alan Ingram will start work as Springfield’s new School Superintendent on Tuesday July 1st, but the one place you will not find him on his first day is behind his desk.

Ingram will visit six schools and a summer food service program on Tuesday so he can meet students, parents, teachers, administrators, custodians, community members and others.

Ingram’s plan to spend his first day on the job in the schools and not in the office is indicative of the hand-on approach, which he will apply as leader of the city’s School Department.

“I want to first get out there where children are learning, and parents and teachers are working together to help kids. I want to talk to the custodians and to the food service workers, office staff, teachers, principals, and para-professionals,” said Ingram.

Ingram said he believes it is important to listen to a broad cross-section of people involved in the education of Springfield students. “It is important to me that members of the community understand that I am here to listen to their concerns and know that I intend to work closely with the School Committee to make improvements to our system. My sole purpose here is to provide a better education for Springfield students,” he said.
