Loon PondLoon Pond Beach is a new acquisition for the City. This property had been approved for the development of 48 condominium units. Realizing such development of this small watershed would change the water quality forever, the City, with the help of the Commonwealth’s Urban Self Help program, acquired Loon Pond Beach in February, 2007. This property accounts for approximately 22.5% of the Loon Pond shoreline. With this acquisition, the City now possesses upwards of 35% of the water’s edge. This allows not only for the protection of the immediate shoreline but the watershed as well. Loon Pond is a kettlehole pond and boasts some of the best quality surface water to be found in any urban environment. It supports established fisheries with large mouth bass, white perch, bluegill, pumpkinseed, and yellowbelly sunfish being among a few of the species found in the pond. This once private land is now a public resource and boasts a restored beach and parking lot, an ADA compliant restroom facility and lifeguard presence, providing citizens with an inner-city swimming facility and beautiful recreation area.
