White Street Fire Station

Construction of the new 12,000 square foot fire station, located at White and Vermont Streets is complete.   The station houses Engine 3 and Ladder 3 companies and serves the neighborhoods of Forest Park, La Broad, East Forest Park, Maple High and Outer Belt.  It replaces the Oakland Street and Sumner Avenue Stations, which are the oldest (built in 1894 and 1925, respectively) and in the poorest condition of all the Springfield Fire Department stations.

The Department of Capital Asset Construction provided Project Management services with assistance from ARCADIS staff.  The architectural firm of Dore and Whittier in partnership with Cole and Russel Architects designed the building and local Springfield general contractor, Fontaine Brothers, Inc., was awarded the publicly bid contract.

This station is the first municipal building to be constructed in 10 years and it will use 22% less energy and 40% less water consumption than a code compliant building.  And the project reached its goal of diverting 95% of construction waste from landfills.

The project team has applied to the U.S. Green Building Council for a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification and has a GOLD status pending.  Please follow the links below for additional information on the USGBC LEED rating system and the fire station sustainability feature.
