Restoration of Decorative Finishes

Several years ago, a water leak damaged plaster and paint finishes in the Mayor's Private Office, the City Hall Council Chambers, and the ceiling in the grand staircase.  The water leak was fixed, and last fall the City publicly bid repairs to the damaged ceilings, including restoring the existing decorative paint finishes on the ceilings of the Mayor's Private Office and the City Council Chambers, and creating and installing a mural on the ceiling of the grand staircase illustrating the history of Springfield.  Monaco Restoration, Inc., was the qualified low-bidder and was awarded the contract.  The mural was created by Monaco's sub-contractor, Ron Deziel, DZLArt, Inc.

The mural is the artist's interpretation of the incredibly rich history and significant past of the City of Springfield, and juxtaposes the early years of the founders with Springfield's modern cityscape.  Blended together in an imaginative historical mosaic, Springfield's iconic architecture is featured, remarkable Springfield inventions are included, famous individuals are represented, and businesses and products that have carried Springfield's name throughout the nation and the world are also included.

The mural not only serves as a daily reminder to visitors to City Hall of all the amazing things Springfield has contributed to the world, but also serves as a teaching tool for students learning more about their community.
