The New Putnam Vocational Technical High School
The new 315,000 square foot Putnam Vocational Technical High School will be a state-of- the-art learning environment serving 1400 students in grades 9 – 12. The new school will be constructed on Plum Field replacing the existing 378,000 square foot PVTHS constructed in 1938. Putnam draws from the entire Springfield community, including neighborhoods as distant and diverse as Forest Park, Sixteen Acres, the North End, the South End, and the historic Hill-McKnight neighborhoods and is considered a high school of choice. There will be 22 vocational programs offered in the new building including: Automotive Collision Repair Graphic Communications
The new Roger L. Putnam Vocational Technical High School will be a high performance green school. The new facility will incorporate superior energy performing mechanical systems, waste stream reduction (during construction), minimizing water consumption, maximizing natural light throughout the building and improving issues of indoor air quality. The scheduled occupancy date for this new facility is September 2012 at which time the old structure will be razed. The entire project is scheduled for completion by August 2013. The City was fortunate to be able to take advantage of the current construction climate and has realized a savings of approximately $15M versus the construction estimates from the Architect and Construction Manager. The total construction cost for this project is $87,372,085. On May 3, 2010 the project commenced with a Notice to Proceed being given to Consigli/Morganti. The building is designed by DRA Architects of Newton, MA. ARCADIS US, Inc with a local office in Springfield is the Owner’s Project Manager and a joint venture of Consigli Construction of Milford and Morganti Construction of Ridgefield, CT is the Construction Manager.
