The School Committee consists of six members elected to four-year terms; three members are elected every two years. The mayor is chair of the School Committee. A vice-chair is elected from among the remaining six members.
The committee sets school policy, hires, evaluates and may fire the superintendent and reviews and passes the annual budget and supplementary budgets. It also approves the curriculum, the discipline policy, and textbooks, and negotiates and approves contracts for buses and personnel.
The School Committee meets twice a month on Thursday evenings at 7:30 in Room 220, City Hall. Call the committee office for exact dates. Before certain committee meetings, public speak-outs are scheduled at 7:00 p.m. To learn the date of the next public speak-out, citizens should call the committee office and sign up by leaving their names and stating the topics they wish to address.
