The abatement, remediation and demolition work at the York Street Jail site achieves another milestone on Tuesday, December 18th with the first building demolition of the project commencing.
The work beginning on Tuesday is the demolition of the smaller buildings to the rear of the site, known as buildings 4, 5, and 6. The buildings are utility buildings along with a boiler house. The work will be done with smaller equipment and will not be visible from adjacent roadways. Hazardous materials remediation on these smaller buildings has been completed.
More visible and significant building demolition of the larger buildings should begin on or around February 1, 2008 when the cell block buildings, the gymnasium, and the warden house all bordering West Columbus Avenue will begin demolition. Those buildings are currently undergoing hazardous materials remediation.
Media interested in viewing Tuesday’s work should contact the Project Engineer to schedule a time.
