Mayor Sarno Backs Casinos In Massachusetts

(January 31, 2008) - Mayor Domenic J. Sarno today reiterated his support for casinos in Massachusetts and Western Massachusetts in particular, saying the city needs to retain the approximately $1 billion per year that Massachusetts residents now spend in casinos in Connecticut and elsewhere.

"I stand firm on my commitment to this venture, especially with news out of Boston that there may be up to a $750 million budget deficit," said Sarno.

Sarno pointed out that he supports the casino in the woods concept, based on data that shows urban settings are not effective locations for casinos. The Mayor said he supports the Mohegan Sun proposal in Palmer, saying it would create opportunities for Springfield and surrounding communities.

"While casinos may not be the ultimate answer to our economic issues, they clearly will create new opportunities for construction jobs, permanent employment and much needed revenue that can be used for many purposes, including a possible reduction in property taxes," said Sarno.

Sarno spoke about the tourism impact that a casino could have on the City of Springfield.

"We need to be at the table when negotiations start, because wherever the casino may be in Western Massachusetts, Springfield has to be one of the beneficiaries of the Hampden County Host Fee. We need to establish jobs, tourist attractions and vendor agreements in a way that will benefit Springfield and area communities. I will represent our citizens at that negotiating table," said Sarno.

Mayor Sarno's support for the casino venture has been a consistent message and he pointed out that 35 percent of the business in Connecticut casinos comes from Massachusetts residents.

"We need to bring that money home," he said.
