May 30, 2008 – Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, Mayoral Aide Darryl Moss, Tyrone Dawkins of the Hampden Country Sheriff’s Department and representatives from: the Department of Youth Services, Springfield Police Department, Citywide Violence Prevention Task Force, Springfield Graffiti Remediation and Bay Area neighbors will come together for a group walk through the Bergen Circle, Bay Street and Federal Street neighborhoods on Saturday, May 31st at 11 a.m.
Coordinated by the Mayor’s Office and the Hampden County Sheriff’s Department, the purpose of the walk is to access quality of life issues and public safety concerns of residents.
“The significance of this walk is that we will gather important information as a unit and that will allow us to plan our work from the same point of origin as we move forward,” said Moss, who is the youth violence prevention liaison in the Office of Mayor Domenic J. Sarno. “It not only puts on the same page, but on the same sentence.”
Attorney Tom Walsh, constituent services director in the Office of Mayor Sarno, said the Mayor’s office conducted neighborhood walks in Forest Park. More are being scheduled, though Walsh said the effort is currently concentrated on the more challenged neighborhoods.
“The contingents met many neighborhood residents on the walks who were extremely pleased and receptive to our presence in the neighborhoods,” said Walsh.
Mayor Sarno; Walsh; Graffiti Remediation Liaison Michael Cass; Springfield Code Enforcement representative Robert DeMusis; Springfield Police Department Crime Watch Coordinator Jim Gormally; Hampden County Sheriff Department representatives Sean Murphy, Ian McCollum and William Winslow; and neighborhood residents participated in the walks.
During the walks, graffiti was removed and a list of housing code violations was compiled. The majority of housing code violations noted on the walks were at residences owned by landlords that do not live in Springfield.
While each of the city’s 17 neighborhoods have distinct issues, the overall purpose of these walks are to show a presence in the City’s neighborhoods and to take a proactive approach to reduce housing code violations, crime, and to combat ongoing quality life complaints.
