Public Forum to Discuss Housing Design Guidelines

WHO: City of Springfield, Office of Planning and Economic Development
WHAT: Public Forum to discuss and review Housing Design Guidelines
WHEN: Thursday, June 26 at 6 p.m.
WHERE: Kasparian Center, 60 Alton St., Room 205

The City of Springfield is developing design guidelines to aid developers in the construction of new infill housing in the City.  Infill housing is defined as newly constructed housing that is built on a vacant lot or lots in an established neighborhood.  Concerns over new housing that is poorly designed and does not reflect the established architectural styles of the built environment have been heard from various neighborhood organizations, particularly in the City’s older neighborhoods. The goal for the design guidelines will be to integrate traditional neighborhood design standards into our neighborhoods, ultimately improving the quality of life for inhabitants of newly constructed homes and visually improving the streetscape where new homes are built.

It is the City’s stance that good design will add value to individual properties and neighborhoods while not adding cost to the developer.  To this end a design guidelines manual is being created and will be offered to developers to facilitate better design in one and two-family homes that are built in the City.  Public input for this process is essential. We will review the process at the Public Forum and wide is encouraged.
