Patrick J. Sullivan, Executive Director of Springfield's Department of Parks, Buildings, and Recreation Management, announced that numerous renovation and repair projects have been completed in Springfield school buildings over the summer recess.
Recent work with an estimated value of 3.3 million dollars has been completed in various schools throughout the Springfield district. Projects have included repairing and upgrading emergency exit lights/signs and fire alarm systems; floor tiling and carpet installation; paving parking lots and refurbishing sidewalks; performing painting and plumbing work; and repairing school swimming pools. In addition, roofs were replaced at Talmadge, Balliet, Kiley, and Duggan schools.
Also, energy conservation projects totaling nearly nine million dollars have been finished. Energy conservation measures for buildings, including installing new lighting and controls, energy efficient boilers and energy management systems, will save the city millions of dollars over the next ten years.
"I am very pleased with the significant progress we have made this summer in preparing our facilities for the upcoming school year," Sullivan stated. "Even though we are confronted with older buildings that had fallen into disrepair because of budgetary constraints, our department has been able to remedy existing problems and has begun to implement proactive measures to ensure that all municipal buildings provide a comfortable, secure setting for students and the general public."
Sullivan indicated that he and his staff are committed to working closely with principals and other school administrators in providing an environment in all school buildings that will assist the School Department in meeting its scholastic objectives.
