How much is the trash fee?
The Springfield Finance Control Board established an annual fee of $90.00 for each city-provided container per dwelling unit and commercial unit, including dumpster space allocation, which receives trash services from the city.
No allowance is currently made for owners who generate less than 95 gallons of trash per week. Eventually, the city hopes to transition its solid waste management program from a flat fee to a variable fee Pay-As-You-Throw program to help residents reduce the costs of trash services and increase the city’s recycling rate.
No proration is available to partial year residents, who maintain residence for any period of time outside Springfield, e.g. leaving home during winter months. Similarly, no proration is available to property owners who utilize city solid waste collection service only during partial year.
Each container, or dumpster allocation, incurs a separate fee of the $90.00 charged to the owner. If your property has more than one container assigned to it because of number of dwellings or units, and you no longer need all containers, you may turn them in to the city and the annual charges will be adjusted accordingly. If you have purchased the additional container(s) from the city because of your higher trash needs, you own such container(s), and you can either keep them or return them to the city; however, the initial charge for obtaining the container from the city will not be refunded to you. Also, the first container must remain at the property, unless you opt out the city’s trash service.
