Yard WasteYard waste from City households is delivered to the Springfield Regional Compost Site on Bondi's Island. Over 14,000 tons of yard waste is collected each year from Springfield residents. The material takes between 6 months to a year to decompose enough to be called compost. Over 600 tons of finished compost is delivered to parks around the City in early spring for use by residents. The rest is sold as a soil amendment for various uses. The DPW picks up yard and leaf waste at the curb from Springfield residents on alternating weeks, the same day that rubbish and recycling is set out. Curbside collection occurs during the months of April through December. Yard waste and leaves should be placed loosely in a barrel or in special paper bags that can be purchased at local grocery stores. Branches can be no wider than 3" in diameter and no longer than 4' and must be tied for pickup. Logs and Stumps are not collected but may be brought to the drop off site for a fee. ($20-$25 a yard minimum 1 yard). Drop-offResidents from Springfield and Agawam can bring yard and leaf waste to the Bondi's Island drop-off at no charge. The hours are Monday through Friday 7:30 am to 3:15 PM. In addition the drop-off is open during the fall leaf season on Saturdays from 7:00 am to 3:00 PM More:
