Special Heavy Motor Equipment Operator (SHMEO)

   SUMMARY:        

            This is skilled work in operating specialized and heavy motor equipment on an assigned basis.

            Work involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of heavy, specialized, and frequently complex construction and maintenance equipment requiring considerable job knowledge and manipulative skill.  Work is performed under general supervision in accordance with accepted practice by assigned motor equipment operators who receive the rate for this class only while engaged in actual operation of equipment specified.  Working supervision may be exercised over assigned helpers.

RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to:

  •             Operates a Forestry Division Log-Loader with Hoisting capability.
  •             Operates asphalt distributors, road rollers, asphalt pavers, heavy derrick truck, and bulldozers.
  •             Operates power graders, gradalls, power shovels, and front end shovel loaders.
  •             Operates cranes and Krane Kars.
  •             Operates motor equipment determined by the Personnel Director to be of similar tonnage and operating difficulty.

SKILLS/COMPENTENCIES include, but are not limited to:

  • Considerable knowledge of the operation, care and minor maintenance and adjustment of the heavy and specialized construction and maintenance equipment to which assigned.
  •             Considerable knowledge of hazards and safety precautions involved in operating special heavy motor equipment.
  •             Working knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, rules, and regulations.
  •             Ability to operate special heavy motor equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment operated.
  •             Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions frequently of a technical nature.
  •             Ability to perform tasks requiring considerable physical strength and agility.
  •             Skill in operating special heavy motor equipment to which assigned.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  •             Considerable experience in the operation of special heavy motor equipment to which assigned.
  •             Graduation from a standard high school or vocational school.

NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  •              Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license as issued by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  •             Possession of special operating licenses as issued by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, as required by this assignment, that include a CDL License with a 1C Hoisting License.
