Public Health Nurse Practitioner
SUMMARY: This position coordinates and provides primary health care to patients within a clinical specialty such as, adult health, child health, family health, maternal health, or in specialized areas of public health practices such as communicable disease control or family planning. The position involves providing direct health care to patients, assisting in planning and evaluating health clinical programs, procedures and operations, and providing clinical supervision to subordinate Nurse Practitioners and other health care personnel.
RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to: - Performs physical examinations of patients using customary testing procedures and equipment, and performs and interprets laboratory tests and procedures in the clinic.
- Takes, records, reviews and interprets the medical and social history of patients.
- Makes assessments of patients’ clinical problems and initiates appropriate management including medication and follow-up according to medical guidelines and protocols.
- Interprets findings and diagnosis to patient and provides counseling and advice on methods of treatment, control, prevention, and answers to patients’ questions.
- Provides clinical supervision to health care staff in a clinical setting.
- Reviews cases with physician to discuss findings and devise a plan of patient care covering both medical and nursing aspects of cases.
- Participates in staff meetings to discuss specific patient problems and changes in policies and procedures to maintain staff communication and high quality patient care.
- Assists in planning and evaluating clinical programs, policies, and procedures.
- Orients new professional clinical staff; carries out health education and prevention programs.
SKILLS/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED include, but are not limited to: - Thorough knowledge of nursing theories, principles, practices and techniques.
- Thorough knowledge of medical principles and practices as they relate to the role of a Nurse Practitioner.
- Considerable knowledge of the procedures and equipment used in physical examinations.
- Skill in clinical assessment, treatment and follow-up care of health problems.
- Ability to provide clinical supervision of assigned health care personnel and subordinates.
- Ability to plan and evaluate clinical programs and to maintain detailed records and prepare reports.
- Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other staff members and the general public, and to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
EDUCATION/PROFESSIONALCERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES REQUIRED:
Certification from the Massachusetts State Education Department as a Nurse Practitioner, and either: A Master’s Degree in nursing from a regionally accredited or registered college or university and one year of experience as a nurse clinician, nurse practitioner, nursing supervisor or nursing teacher, or, graduation from a regionally accredited or registered college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and two years experience shown above.
