Springfield's Brownfields Redevelopment Program began in 1995 as a core element of its overall economic strategy. The program has seen many successes which has included the Rebecca Johnson school, a former brownfield and blighted area in the McKnight neighborhood. In addition to the school there is also a community service center, health clinic, day care center and a fire station.

Another brownfield involved the clean-up of the former Hampden Color and Chemical plant and the location of Astro Logistics to the East Springfield neighborhood.

The City's objective is to promote sustainable economic development, address environmental issues in densely populated areas, and give its residents a healthy place to live and work.

 Program Update:

May 15, 2007 - Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) selects the City for two brownfields assessment grant funds.

                -  $200,000 for hazardous substances

                -  $200,000 for petroleum

These hazardous substances grant funds will be used to update the city's brownfields inventory, and to perform Phase I and II environmental site assessments. Funds also will be used to conduct community outreach activities. Petroleum funds will be used to perform the same tasks at sites with potential petroleum contamination.
