Union Station

Project Location: The development site is located in the Downtown (north blocks) area and involves the restoration of Union Station located on Frank B. Murray Street and the development of an abutting vacant lot on Main Street.
Property Owners: Springfield Redevelopment Authority (SRA)

Description:
Union Station (two structures built in 1926)

  • Both structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places
  • 3 Story Main Terminal Building – 120,250 SF (Land area - 50,000 SF)
  • 2 Story Baggage Building – 92,618 SF (Land Area -53,000 SF)
  • Abutting parcel – 30,723 SF (Former Hotel Charles site)

Project Status:

  • The City is working with the PVTA about advancing a transportation project that will revitalize the station and the surrounding area. PVTA has secured the services of HDR, Inc. to move forward on a re-use of the property.
  • On June 8, 2007, the Lt. Governor announced a $350,000 planning grant from the Commonwealth's Executive Office of Transportation which will be used to create a new, revised development plan for the Union Station and for a market analysis aimed at making the project feasible and achievable.
