Technical High School Re-Use

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has chosen the former Technical High School site to ouse the new state data center. The data center is expected to create many jobs and construction of the data center will take about two years to complete. The Division of Capital Asset Management has contracted with the architectural firm Jung Brannen as architect and a team of sub-contractors.

The purpose of this project is to provide a second data center for the Commonwealth's Information Technology Division to operate as an active back-up to the Mass. Information Technology Center (MITC) in Chelsea. The facility will be at a higher level of reliability than the existing data facilities at MITC, provide a critical back-up data facility for the Commonwealth and be a "show case" green data center. _{^{(www.mass.gov}})

PROJECT OVERVIEW:

The Springfield Data Center will help ensure the state's computer systems and digital assets continue to be properly secured and maintained, while providing greater operational efficiencies for the Commonwealth, and an economic boost for the City of Springfield.

• The Springfield Data Center will serve to backup the state's primary data center in Chelsea, which houses a critical network of data systems used by thousands of state workers - including police officers, social workers, and health professionals - who need immediate access to sensitive information to carry out their jobs.
• The Springfield Data Center is a key part of our strategy to manage our technology more effectively by consolidating the executive departments' distributed data centers into two efficiently managed facilities and become a national model for green and environmental friendly data centers.
• The new data center in Springfield will help support economic recovery for the city with over 200 new construction jobs and up to 35 permanent jobs to operate the facility.  ^{_{(www.mass.gov)}}

Details of the center, which will be built on the site of the long-shuttered Technical High School, were presented Thursday afternoon at the new Federal Courthouse located near the school. U.S. Rep Richard E. Neal, D-Springfield, presided over the briefing with more than 75 people present.

Division of Capital Asset Management (DCAM) Update:
The currently funded first phase of the project will provide approximately 11,500 square feet of computer area supported by extensive mechanical systems.  Support and office areas will occupy the remainder of the building. The shell space for a second phase of computer area development will be built in this project phase. (www.mass.gov)
