Emerson Wight Playground RenovationsLocation: Marble Street, South End Description: As part of the larger revitalization effort of the South End neighborhood, the City will be undertaking a major renovation of the expanded EWP. Neighborhood residents have been involved with the Springfield Parks and Recreation Department in the design and layout of the expanded facility. Among the features considered for the renovated park are new playscapes, a water feature, playing fields, a running track, bocce courts, and a pavilion. In addition, a serious drainage problem caused by runoff from the bluff to the east will be corrected. Click here to see park design drawing. Status: Installation of drainage was completed and grading of site is underway. Outing Park Historic District RehabilitationLocation: Oswego St., Bayonne St., Dwight St. Ext., and Niagara St. Description: This project entails a phased rehabilitation of 23 historic, four-story masonry buildings built between 1913 and 1927 known as the “Hollywood District”. The developer of this project is First Resource Companies LLC. The district was recently designated a historic district and named “Outing Park”. The rehabilitation will include: roofs, windows, re-pointing and cleaning masonry, boilers, kitchens, baths, new floors and common area hallways, intercom, fire escapes, fire alarm systems, security systems, sidewalks, street lights, landscaping and fencing. Learn more about Worthington Commons, a past rehabilitation project by First Resource Companies LLC. Status: Construction is anticipated to start in the Spring 2012. Dwight Street Extension Streetscape ImprovementsLocation: Dwight Street Extension, South End Description: The project area spans three blocks and encompasses about 850 feet of roadway. The main goal of this project is to improve the physical roadway conditions, on-street parking, and improve lighting and safety. Specific infrastructure improvements will include the reconstruction of sidewalks, installation of new lighting, wheelchair ramps, crosswalks, and new trees. The total estimated cost of these improvements is $1.2 million dollars. Click here to see street design. Status: The City has been awarded a MassWorks Infrastructure Grant which will pay for construction of these improvements. Construction is anticipated to begin in the Spring 2012.
