Mayor Domenic J. Sarno joined with Harlem Globetrotter Ambassador Scooter Christensen, Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame President & CEO John Doleva, MGM Springfield President and COO Chris Kelley, MassMutual Center General Manager Sean Dolan, Massachusetts Convention Center Authority Executive Director David Gibbons, Springfield Thunderbirds President Nate Costa, Greater Springfield Convention and Visitors Bureau and other special guests to celebrate the Globetrotters' history and the importance of Basketball as we embark on Black History Month.

Mayor Sarno states, “It was great to meet with Globetrotter Ambassador Scooter Christensen.  Scooter is such a down-to-earth and humble individual.  We had a good talk about the history of the Globetrotters and how the sport of basketball brought people together no matter their creed, color or background.  I cannot thank Scooter enough for his giving back to our community, especially to our youth – it was also pretty cool to watch his skills spinning the basketball, he made it so easy that even I could do it!  Thank you to John Doleva and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame for hosting this event and thank you to Chris Kelley and his MGM Springfield team for their efforts on making this event possible.  Special shout out to the Harlem Globetrotters for their continued commitment and dedication to our community as we kickoff our Black History Month celebrations.”

Scooter Christensen is an accomplished basketball player winning a state championship and team MVP honors in high school.  Scooter went on to play at the University of Montana, leading the Grizzlies to the NCAA tournament in 2002. He is one of only three players in school history to lead the team in assists three straight seasons, and he is still second on the school’s all-time assist list.  Known for his elite dribbling and as the Globetrotters’ premier ball handler, you can catch Scooter and his teammates in action as they take on the Washington Generals at the MassMutual Center on February 11, 2022.
